Four Drums from 2001 |
Djembes are the flagship of Treefrog Percussion's line of excellent drums. Immediately recognizable by their multi-tiered mosaic–like design, each drum uses a unique combination of woods assuring that no two drums are exactly alike. Over 100 of these beautiful limited run drums have been sold since 2000, and Leo is still in touch with many of their owners
Since his apprenticeship with Carla in 2000, Leo has modified the design to make these creations distinctly his own. 2007 marks another year of change for these drums. Upgrades to the workshop will allow Leo to build the drums in slightly larger sizes than before, maximizing wood use. With the exception of the “Backpacker” drum, all new drums will be roughly 24” tall. For smaller drums, see the djembek section of the site.

For custom orders, the skin on these drums can either be folded over the tension ring when mounted or the ring can be left visible. If the ring is left visible it can be wrapped with either one or two ribbon colours for a candy stripe effect. Contact us for colours and availability.

Some Facts about Treefrog Percussion Djembes:
• Each drum contains at least 15 types of domestic and exotic hardwoods. Domestic woods include cherry, walnut, maple, beech and poplar. Exotic woods include cocobolo, canary wood, purple heart, bubinga, padouk, and zebra wood.
• It can take up to 40 hours to complete a drum, spread out over several weeks or months.
• Each drum has a serial number and is part of a limited run for each year. For example, serial number 0317 would be the seventeenth drum made in 2003.
• While for logistical reasons the design and dimensions of the drums remains constant, no two drums will have identical wood content.
• Drums are skinned with either Canadian or African goatskin.
• Every Treefrog Percussion drum is 100% warranteed. If anything breaks (except the skin) we will repair or replace it.
Here are some samples of my favorite drums from years past. The numbers below refer to the serial number of the drum. The first two digits are from the year the drum was made, the last two are the number of the drum in the series. For example, 0324 would be the 24th drum made in 2003.

Leo hopes to make this page a sort of "Audio Gallery" for the drums he builds.
Until such time as he can build the drums and gather more samples, please enjoy this version of the popular rhythm Kuku
